In autumn 2021, the Toneelmakerij and Silbersee presented the family performance Hans and Gretel, based on Grimm’s well-known fairy tale. It became an exciting, funny and moving coming-of-age story, told with a mix of opera, acting, singing, hip-hop, dance and surprising video images. The performance was very well received, Theaterkrant (a theater magazine) praised the “magical musical theatre full of wonderful characters, funny and quite scary adventures.” Thanks to a contribution from Fonds 1999, five hundred children for whom going to the theatre is not an obvious option were able to take part in the “All Children to Theatre”-programme and enjoy this contemporary version of the opera together with their loved ones.
