STICHTING ZOMERKLAS – SUMMER CLASS 2023

© 2023 Stichting zomerklas

Stichting Zomerklas organizes language and culture weeks during the summer holidays for children aged 13-18 who have lived in the Netherlands for less than five years. Most of these youngsters have fled, alone or with family, from countries such as Syria, Iraq, Somalia, Eritrea and Ukraine, though children of migrant workers also participate. The Summer Classes are not only a fun activity during the long holiday period, through their participation in the activities, Stichting Zomerklas aims to maintain, and even increase, the language level of the youngsters. Participation in the Summer Class thus contributes to a better correspondence with higher education, and it increases the youngsters’ chances on the labour market. Through the formula of learning subjects combined with creative and sporting activities, Stichting Zomerklas encourages the youngsters in various areas. In the mornings, the participants work on language. These mornings are based on the afternoon’s activities. These afternoon activities are diverse: from theatre & dance to technology, from music to museum visits, from sports to visual arts. For example, a visit to the Textile Museum is prepared by giving assignments about colour, material, and shape. The Summer Class 2023 was able to take place partly thanks to a donation from the 1999 Fund.
