THEATER NA DE DAM
© 2021

As the generations that consciously experienced the run-up to and the Second World War are dying out, reflection on meaningful commemoration and ‘Never Again War’ is more urgent than ever for the younger generations. How can younger generations empathize and sympathize with what happened then? How do you recognize signals of the undermining of the rule of law and radicalization as it emerged in the 1930s?

Theater Na de Dam tries to achieve this with youth performances throughout the country. Fonds 1999 has supported Theater Na de Dam in 2021 with the artistic-social projects in Weesp, Sittard, Amsterdam and Utrecht. Based on conversations with eyewitnesses, young people were activated to relate to the commemoration on May 4. What does it mean for them and the times we live in now? They thus provide a new perspective for themselves, for their immediate environment and the neighbourhood in which they live.
