In May 2022, Holland Baroque visited the School for Young Talent (SYT) in Suriname for one week, accompanied by the young singers Lucretia Starke and Arturo den Hartog, two alumni of the Kathedrale Koorschool and both former vocal students at the Royal Conservatoire in The Hague.

The overarching aim of this project was to make music together with the children of the SYT in Paramaribo, led by Albert Arens; conductor, founder and director of the school. Concerts were given in Paramaribo’s wooden cathedral, the President’s Palace and the Ministry of Education. The company also travelled to the district of Brokopondo to perform a concert for the locals.

The second part of the international exchange took place in November 2022, as part of the celebration of Utrecht 900 years of city rights. In an unprecedented line-up, they concluded the festivities on 11 November, St Martin’s Day, with a musical tribute to Utrecht. The grand programme and collaborative initiative also became the stage for the world premiere of two new songs composed by Erik van der Horst, alongside a rendition of Georg Friedrich Handel’s compelling Utrecht Te Deum and Jubilate.

With support from Fonds 1999, Holland Baroque contributed with Baroque in Paramaribo to the further development of a structure for music and music education in Suriname.
