CELLO BIENNIAL 2022

© Foppe Schut

Ten festival days with 108 events including 12 master classes (given thanks in part to a donation by Fonds 1999), 6 Bach&Breakfasts, Artist in residence Jean-Guihen Queyras, 4 lectures around the festival theme, 10 world premieres and 14 surprise concerts in the Yurt by more than 85 top cellists and 19 ensembles and orchestras. With the theme of The Cello Moves – the cello that moves, makes us move and moves us – the Cello Biennial had many directions it could go into, leading to intriguing performances and concerts with dance, movement and emotion.

After the festival could not go ahead in 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic, is was a great relief the Cello Biennial did not lose any ambience and that both past and new visitors managed to find their way to the Muziekgebouw. Audience reactions were telling: with an average score of 8.9, the audience appreciated this edition more than ever!
