During Stiftfestival 2021, with the Eastern Winds theme, the complete cycle of Shostakovich’s string quartets was alternated with premieres by Russian composers, walking and cycling concerts in the beautiful landscapes of Twente, open-air concerts on estates, Candlelight concerts in the medieval Stiftskerk, a family concert with circus Tubantino, a baby concert and dozens of other programs. The mostly sold-out concerts were – after a year of few live concerts – a highlight for the more than 4000 visitors with more than a week of music at the international top level.
Thanks to a contribution by Fonds 1999, the Festival was able to produce a large-scale opening performance in the context of Piazzolla’s 100th birthday: a semi-staged version of the tango opera Maria de Buenos Aires by Astor Piazzolla for the castle of Landgoed Twickel, starring the international star Daniel Bonilla Torres as El Duende.
