Kletsmaatjes, a programme run by Stichting Het Begint met Taal, brings newcomers and Dutch-speaking volunteers together for weekly online conversations. For many non-native speakers in the Netherlands, including refugees and labour migrants, language is a key means of taking part in society. Without language skills, feelings of loneliness arise more quickly, and it becomes harder to participate. Through Kletsmaatjes, participants not only practise the Dutch language but also build confidence, social contacts and understanding of Dutch society.
Thanks to the support of Fonds 1999, Stichting Het Begint met Taal is able to match more newcomers with a volunteer conversation partner and shorten waiting times. The online conversations are low-threshold and flexible, allowing participants to take part from anywhere in the Netherlands. In this way, Kletsmaatjes strengthens the connection between people and contributes to an inclusive society in which newcomers feel at home more quickly.
