National Children’s Remembrance Day on 4 May is a unique event for, by and with children, in which they give meaning to the commemoration of war victims in their own way. The National Children’s Remembrance Day is interactive and educational. Children write poems, create artworks, sing, and share their own thoughts on freedom. Through this creative and personal approach, they experience that remembrance is not only about looking back, but also about looking ahead to a world in which respect and connectedness are central. Education is an essential component of the National Children’s Remembrance Day, as it helps children understand why we commemorate and what freedom truly means. Freedom is not self-evident; it is something people in the past fought for and something we must continue to protect together. By listening to stories, children develop a personal and emotional connection with history. Stories about choices, courage and the consequences of war make abstract concepts such as peace and freedom tangible. This approach fosters empathy, critical thinking and awareness. Children discover that behind every name and every event lies a human story, and that they themselves have a role to play in cherishing freedom. In this way, remembrance becomes not only a moment of silence, but also a learning process that contributes to citizenship and responsibility for the future. Living in freedom is precious, and we must take good care of it. With the National Children’s Remembrance Day on 4 May—made possible in part in 2025 by Fonds 1999—we ensure that the message of 4 May remains alive, not only for adults, but also for the generations of tomorrow.
