STICHTING HET GRONINGER LANDSCHAP – VITAL LANDSCAPE ELEMENTS IN THE HUNZEZONE
The Hunzezone is a green oasis between the industrial areas in the city of Groningen. Here you can still find streams of the old river Hunze that once flowed from Drenthe via Groningen to the Wadden Sea. We owe the Hunzezone to the late farmer Thies Dijkhuis, who was the last farmer to resist the advancing companies. A place to cherish and keep green, also in the future. Due to circumstances, some of the landscape elements were in danger of deteriorating. Fallen trees and watermark disease have caused gaps to appear in the original wooded areas, while seclusion is characteristic of the Hunzezone. Thanks to the support of Fonds 1999, diseased and damaged trees have been removed and new trees and shrubs have been planted in open spaces. Around the pond, an important habitat for amphibians, space was created to let the sun through. This benefits the quality of the habitat of the amphibians.
