The ‘Biomeiler 2.0’ project is an innovative collaboration initiative between the Biomeiler Foundation and Utrecht University. The project focuses on improving and testing a biomeiler, a composting system with heat recovery, on a scale of 1:1. This biomeiler was realized with the support of Fonds 1999. Two important innovations were implemented in this project to optimize both composting and heat extraction. Firstly, composting is promoted by actively aerating the biomass. Secondly, a heat exchanger has been added, which taps heat from the process via condensation. To properly monitor the process, the biomeiler is equipped with temperature sensors and other measuring equipment. The Biomeiler Foundation and the students involved will monitor and analyze the entire process, with the aim of further improving the system and further developing the technology for future use. For the next two years, the biomeiler will supply heat to the cowshed of the university farm ‘De Tolakker’ on the campus of Utrecht University.
