STICHTING BARTHOLOMEUS GASTHUIS – SPRING FESTIVAL
Stichting Bartholomeus Gasthuis is a care organisation in the centre of Utrecht with a history dating back to 1367, aimed at providing quality care, housing, and social welfare for the elderly. Thanks in part to a donation from Fonds 1999, around 550 visitors came together on Saturday, 21 March 2026, to celebrate the start of spring at the Bartholomeus Gasthuis during the spring festival. They enjoyed a day full of connection, music, and activities. Connection was at the heart of the event. In the inner courtyard, visitors joined two rounds of lunch at long tables, surrounded by flowers and spring sunshine. In addition, the gasthuis offered a varied programme with performances, workshops, talks, walks, and a lively club and entrepreneurs’ market. It was a festival for and by the city centre: residents of the Bartholomeus Gasthuis, neighbours, volunteers, and staff organised and experienced it together. The low-threshold setup made it possible for many elderly people to take part and make new connections. What stood out most was the atmosphere. Visitors praised the warmth and the many ways to get involved — from actively participating to simply being present. The spring festival shows that there is a real need in the city centre for this kind of gathering.
