PLAYING THE CATHEDRAL

On 11 May, the Oude Kerk in Amsterdam celebrated the completed restoration of the Vater-Müller organ and the future of music in its space with the benefit concert which launched the new music program, Playing the Cathedral. The goal of the benefit dinner, founding a new music fund, was achieved at 90%. With it, the Oude Kerk will finance five-year residencies for young, talented composers and musicians. Composer and musical genius Nicolás Jaar created a new composition for the inaugural concert using both organs from the Oude Kerk and electronics. Artist duo Children Of The Light signed for a new site-specific light artwork that – on May 11 – formed a one-off symbiosis with music by Philip Glass, adapted for organ and performed by the composer himself.
