PERFORATOR – IF YOU KNOW WHY A FISH TALKS

© 2023 Perforator

Marlies van Gangelen – classically trained oboist and composer – and Akim Moiseenkov – composer, instrument builder, musician – form the duo Perforator. Together they compose new music for which they use game controllers, joysticks and home-made electronic musical instruments such as racing cars, singing balloons and a pen that produces lyrical sounds by writing in the air, in addition to the oboe. With financial help from Fonds 1999 and others, they created the family performance ‘If you know why a fish talks’. In a collaboration with composer Tijn Wybenga, writer Joost Oomen and the Netherlands Youth String Orchestra, among others, the makers attempt to communicate with a number of species that they believe are undervalued. Self-developed electronic extensions are attached to classical instruments and transform into jellyfish, amoebas or tooth mouthworms during this project.
