INFRARED MICROSCOPE FOR OIL PAINTING STUDIES

The University of Amsterdam and the Rijksmuseum Amsterdam work together within the Netherlands Institute for Conservation, Art and Science (NICAS) on scientific research to gain better insight into the ageing of oil paintings, such as Rembrandt’s The Night Watch. To preserve the painting, it is important to know what influence environmental factors and restorations have on the stability of the oil paint. The knowledge acquired about the chemical and physical processes that alter the structure of the oil paint over centuries, will be used to improve the methods for conserving the paintings.
