BEE FOUNDATION – THE WILD BEES EXPEDITION

© 2025 Stichting Bee Foundation

Since 2015, the Bee Foundation has been committed to providing bee education, creating “bee oases,” and awarding societal “bee stings” to organisations that make a meaningful difference. The foundation observes that many of today’s societal crises stem from a broken relationship between humans and nature. At the heart of its approach lies an appeal to our sense of wonder. The curiosity and engagement awakened by wonder form the basis for restoring our connection with the natural environment. From this renewed relationship, people are inspired to contribute and collaborate with bees.

The Wild Bees Expedition is a powerful expression of this vision. At its core is educational theatre, after which participants set out on a discovery journey themselves—taking on the role of a bumblebee—and learn about bees, biodiversity and the ways in which humans are interconnected with them. All the senses are engaged: participants take part in physical games, listen to storytelling, complete assignments and build knowledge along the way. The expedition consists of seven interactive tables with informative activities that allow participants to experience what it is like to be a bumblebee.

With the support of Fonds 1999, the Bee Foundation developed both a permanent version of the expedition and a pop-up edition. These travel to events and festivals, as well as schools and environmental education centres across the Netherlands, awakening the senses and touching the hearts of young and old alike. For once you come to love bees, caring for them follows naturally.
