DUTCH SOCIETY FOR THE PROTECTION OF BIRDS – BIRDS OF THE NORTH SEA
Many feeding and resting areas for seabirds are unprotected. The birds are affected by fishing, wind and solar parks and climate disruption. Fishing in particular is disastrous. Birds’ food is fished away, ecosystems are destroyed and birds get entangled in nets. The Dutch Society for the Protection of Birds focuses on ecologically sustainable fishing and innovative fishing methods that result in fewer bird casualties. The aim is also to ensure that fishing does not take place in areas that are of great importance to birds as foraging or resting areas, and that important bird areas are protected from wind and solar parks and the associated infrastructure. With the support of Fonds 1999, the Dutch Society for the Protection of Birds has committed itself in 2024 to the protected status of areas in the North Sea that are important for birds, and has contributed to measures for birds such as razorbills, great skuas, great black-backed gulls and guillemots.
