SAILWISE FOUNDATION – RENOVATION OF THE ROBINSON CRUSOE JETTIES

For more than 50 years, SailWise has been providing active watersports holidays for people with physical and/or intellectual disabilities. SailWise’s mission is to promote social wellbeing, physical and mental independence, and the inclusion of people with disabilities through watersports.
One of its locations is Robinson Crusoe, an island situated in the heart of the Loosdrechtse Plassen, where over 700 participants each year enjoy a wide range of small-scale watersports, including sailing, canoeing, stand-up paddleboarding and waterskiing. The jetties and verandas on Robinson Crusoe had become very old and were in such poor condition that they were no longer properly accessible for wheelchair users and people with visual impairments.
Thanks to the support of Fonds 1999, SailWise was able to renovate the jetties and verandas of this unique island in 2025, using sustainable materials. As a result, participants—regardless of their disability—can continue to enjoy watersports safely for decades to come. In this way, they can both figuratively and literally leave their limitations behind on the jetties and experience the added value of truly boundary-breaking watersports activities.
