IVN NATURE EDUCATION – SPECIAL EDUCATION IN THE FOREST
With the project ‘Special Education in the forest’, IVN Nature Education was able to offer hundreds of pupils from various Special Education schools a unique nature experience, partly thanks to the support of Fonds 1999. The pupils came to the IVN Woldhuis for a school trip or a multi-day camp full of nature activities. The programme was tailor-made and supervised according to the needs of the schools. For example, they went catching water animals, building huts, helping the forest ranger with pruning and sawing, exploring the forest and baking bread over the campfire.
The nature activities were good for the children. They learned about everything that grows, crawls, swims and flies in nature in a playful way. In addition, they were getting plenty of exercise and during nature activities talents emerged that are usually not seen in the classroom. Nature education can have very positive effects, especially for pupils in Special Education. For example, someone who experiences physical restlessness in the classroom can be really good at sawing and making fire. The nature experiences at the Woldhuis gave the pupils a boost to their health and self-confidence.
