At least 577,500 Children of Parents with Psychological Problems/Children of Parents with Addiction Problems (CPPP/CPAP) live in the Netherlands. Without adequate help, about 65% of them develop problems similar to those of their parents.

Documentary maker Monique Nolte (previously known as ‘The best for Kees’) followed one of them, Nikki, from the end of primary school to the completion of secondary school.

Nikki (12) is about to exchange the safe primary school for secondary school. She has good grades and a lot of potential, but there are also risk factors, such as her mother’s borderline and depression and the erratic behavior of her addicted, usually absent father. We follow Nikki for five years and see how her mood and school results suffer from the turbulent home situation. In the end she gets a diploma, but the victory is bittersweet: it is a diploma below her level and she clearly did not get through her childhood unscathed.

Producer Doclines was able to realize this multi-year project with the help of Fonds 1999 among others. The documentary NIKKI (shown on Videoland) is also used as a booster for impact activities aimed at improving the position of the CPPP/CPAP children and their families. This by contributing to breaking the taboo and making this issue a subject of discussion, through online storytelling, an eLearning aimed at education and a training of 180 ‘family buddies’ who will expand the informal network around the families in which the Nikki’s of this world grow up. strengthen; this to prevent (further) derailment. The documentary NIKKI was released in September 2022 and has already won several awards.
