The fastest growing group among the homeless is the group of economically (or ‘self-reliant’) homeless people. This group consists of people who, for example, have become homeless due to a divorce. This group of people has no right to shelter and is unable to keep up with the current housing market. A divorce therefore brings with it a lot of concerns, especially if children are involved. Finding suitable (temporary) housing where children can stay is not easy. De Regenboog Groep has so-called Parentshouses for this group of people. A Parentshouse offers temporary housing to parents who are (considering) divorce. The home, shared with others, is near the children’s parental home. This way, both parents can continue to fulfill their care responsibilities and maintain contact with their children. In addition, they are given the peace and space for up to a year to arrange matters, such as finding permanent housing. Binnenkadijk is the first Parentshouse in the center of Amsterdam. There are now 5 people living here who now have peace of mind for a year, receive help in finding their own home and can receive their children. With the help of Fonds 1999, the kitchen of this building has been furnished and made ready for the residents and their children.
